The Authors

I am Anja, 24 years old and I am from Germany. I studied Journalism and Mediacommunication in my Bachelor and I will spezialize on "war & conflict" in the second year of the Erasmus Mundus Master. Growing up on the countryside in Western Germany I got in contact with agricultural topics during my youth. The organic boom in Germany was the crucial factor for looking beyond this trend and analyse it in my article.

Ciesluk LydiaMy name is Lydia and I investigated the case of a Vietnamese aqua farmer caught up in the conflicting forces of environmentalism and political arbitrariness. My research has been supported by the Vietnam Forum of Environmental Journalists where I have been interning in summer 2012. I love the Vietnamese people's welcoming attitude and pragmatism but the massive environmental pollution in the country makes me furious. As a former sports reporter, I am dreaming about bike lanes in Hanoi. Currently, I am doing my Master studies specializing in "Journalism and Media Across Cultures".

My name is Nele (25), I come from Germany and I am holding a Bachelor in Music and Literature. I am in the second year of the Master program “Journalism, Media and Globalisation”, which I am studying in Hamburg. I have been working as a freelance journalist for a newspaper and I did several internships in the field of journalism but also in press and public services. My article is inspired by Khaled Hosseini’s book “A Thousand Splendid Suns”, which is about the tumultuous lives of two Afghan women and how their lives cross each other.

My name is Alinah Bockarie and I am from Sierra Leone, West Africa. I hold a Bachelor in Mass Communications from the University of Sierra Leone. While working within both the media and the private sector in the last five years, I have realized that economic and financial trends influence our daily life. Especially in a country like mine, the people need to be informed adequately about such trends in order to acquire the change we all want to see. In the future, I would love to explain issues relating to the development of my country and support actions aiming at overcoming the socio-economic development gap.

I am Frederic (25) from Essen, Germany. Having gained a Bachelors degree in Social Science my journalistic interest revolves around society. In this high speed world of enhancing complexity one should never forget to focus on the essential: people’s everyday life with its fears and needs. The article was meant to increase public awareness of an uncomfortable topic; there is no organ transplantation without a donor.

My name is Dorothee (24) and I am from Germany. With a Bachelor in Business Administration and three years of working experiences in the financial industry the motivation for my article lies at hand: My utter interest for the economy and finance. It is fascinating to what extend economic and financial deliberations determine our everyday life and how little we know about all that at the same time. In the future, I would like to make a contribution to close that gap and inform about financial topics in a way comprehensible for everyone.

I am Aiste (24) from Lithuania. I finished Journalism BA in Vilnius University and decided to expand my horizons, therefore, I started Erasmus Mundus Master. I'm specializing in Business and finance journalism as global political economy is the topic that interests me the most. My area is TV journalism, so I hope to be able to talk about economy on TV one day.

My name is Angus (31) and I am a freelance writer specialising in electronic music, originally from Australia and now based in Berlin, Germany. In 2012 I completed my Masters in Journalism, and I've worked for just under a decade as a journalist, editor and digital content producer across Australian music media. I'm currently working as a freelance writer for publications across Europe, Australia and the US, and hope to continue to specialise with this same international focus in the future.

journalism global injusticeI am Claudia Wohlsperger (23) from Germany. As a child I spent several years living in the USA with my family. In an attempt not to lose my English skills, I've decided to go abroad for college. It ended up being the Netherlands, where I studied Arts and Culture at Maastricht University, specializing on philosophy and art history. As a journalist, I enjoy the learning process and insight that comes with each project and I hope to pass on this understanding to the reader/viewer/listener.

I’m Hui Gu, and I am from China, I have got the master degree in Economics which is the foundation of my study of business journalism, my curiosity and interests of journalism was evoked by the interview I did during the period I’m preparing my master paper, I was touched by so many stories around me and I thought journalism is the way to spread them and change people’s life for the better. One teacher told me, journalist is such a crucial and Sacred career which is in need of a noble human conscience, if you develop your innerside well-being every day, in the future the society’s inner well-being will move forward with your even little contributions.

My name is Kiyomi (25) from Japan. I took my Bachelor in New Zealand and majored in International Relations. I experienced a three months internship in local newspaper in Saga, Japan, and online freelance journalist. When Japan faced the huge earthquake on 11th March 2011, I was in Tokyo, and nuclear crises, energy problem and journalism in democracy are my journalistic themes since then. In the future, I want to contribute creating media literacy education in compulsory schooling in Japan.

My name is Liselott, I’m 23 years old and come from Finland. I have a BA in Journalism and have been working as a news journalist for four years. Questions about development, environment and global inequality are close to my heart, and after having seen people affected by the so called landgrabbing trend I wanted to look more closely at what rights they have – only to show that money is more important than human rights in the world.

My name's Myriam Wecker; I'm 25 and originally from Luxembourg. I've always enjoyed writing, but, rather than trying to be a novelist, dramaturgist or anything of the sort, I chose to study journalism in my postgraduate studies. I believe that, as a journalist, one has the opportunity to direct public attention to significant and noteworthy issues that would otherwise go unnoticed. Writing a piece of analytical journalism allowed me to do just that: highlighting the wrongdoings of certain biofuel companies and the misery they inflict on the indigenous population who lack the voice to rise awareness.

I am Belinda from Berlin, Germany. Before starting the Erasmus Mundus Masters, I have been studying Foreign Language Studies in Kassel, Germany, and Nice, France. My articles were inspired by my commitment in an international youth project in which I dealt with the environmental issues of our time. The discussions with the other youth representatives enticed me to find out more about the Right to Water and about Seed Storage - the two topics that I finally turned into articles.

My name is Karmen (25). I come from Slovenia and I finished my bachelor in journalism at the University of Ljubljana. Interested in society, I have always been inspired by the everyday life of common people and the amazing stories of their struggling and surviving. My interest widened in the direction of European politics while working as a TV journalist. I bring all of it together in my story about "The Erased", the story of how politics and politicians stood by during the breach of human rights of a group of people from the countries of former Yugoslavia back in 1991, when Slovenia became independent.

I am Virginia, 25 years old and from Hamburg, Germany. I studied German Language and Literature and Latin American Studies in my Bachelor at the University of Hamburg. Now I am studying in the Erasmus Mundus Master “Media and Journalism within Globalization”, specializing in “Journalism and Media across Cultures” in the second year. During my Bachelor I focused on drug-related problems in Latin America and after visiting Colombia I knew that I wanted to analyze the issue more deeply. The Mexican presidential elections gave me the current context for doing so and writing an analytical article about the topic.

My name is Sara (26) and I am from Azores islands in Portugal. I have worked as a radio reporter for three years. Nowadays, I continue to do so as a freelance journalist. In May 2011, the jury of the European Parliament Journalism Prize rewarded my work at Antena 1, with an award for the best Portuguese radio piece of the year. I am very interested in stories related to politics, the EU project, global development, international affairs, migration, democracy and human rights. My articles explore stories about real people affected by political decisions and overwhelming social-economic circumstances.

My name is Anna Gurzhiy Hougaard and I have the dream to become a foreign correspondent stationed in Eastern Europe, Russia or the Caucasus region. Born in Ukraine and grown up Denmark, I am culturally backed up with a mix of a Soviet legacy and a western mindset. That inspires my work. Thus, I wrote an analytical article about the Tymoshenko case and a potential political boycott of the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship.
